How To Load & Switch Fuel
Ovation runs on charcoal, wood, or gas in the same firebox. Here's how to load and switch between them.
Load Your Fuel
Lift the reversible V-grates with the included grate-lifting tool and load the patented fuel trays with charcoal, lump coal, wood chunks, wood logs, or wood chips — mix fuels across trays to run different zones for different flavors in the same cook.
Light the Hybrid
Fire up the 22,000 BTU gas burners beneath the trays and let them run for three to five minutes. The direct flame gives your charcoal or wood a clean, even start — no lighter fluid or chimney starter required.
Cut the Gas
Once the solid fuel has caught, shut the gas off. The extra airflow feeds the coals or wood, and within minutes you're cooking entirely on solid fuel — the fastest route to a full charcoal or wood-fired cook on the Ovation.
Dial In the Flavor
Use the adjustable hood vents to control airflow and temperature, then cook however the moment calls for — pure gas for weeknight speed, solid fuel in a few trays for a smoky edge, or gas and coal together across zones for a full multi-course spread.
